How do I treat diaper rash?

1 min read

Most diaper rashes clear up at home by keeping the skin clean and dry and using a thick barrier paste to shield it from urine and stool.

The most common type is irritant dermatitis: pink or red patches on the skin that touches the diaper, while the protected groin folds usually look normal. Frequent diaper changes, gentle cleansing, and plenty of barrier cream are the foundation of treatment. Skip over-the-counter antibiotic ointments, as some ingredients can make irritation worse.

A barrier paste works like a shield, so apply it thickly, like icing on a cupcake. If the paste isn't soiled, just add more on top rather than scrubbing it off.

What you can do

  • Change diapers often and clean gently with water or alcohol- and fragrance-free wipes.
  • Pat dry and let the skin air out before re-diapering.
  • Apply a thick layer of zinc oxide or petrolatum barrier paste.
  • Leave the diaper a little loose for breathing room.

Based on AAP guidance. Always consult your pediatrician for personalized advice.
