Why does my baby cry for no reason?
1 min read
All babies cry, often without any apparent cause, and it doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. Newborns routinely cry 1 to 4 hours a day as part of adjusting to life outside the womb.
Crying is how your baby calls for help, shuts out sights and sounds that feel too intense, and releases tension. Many babies have fussy periods even when they aren't hungry, tired, or uncomfortable, and right afterward they often seem more alert and then sleep more deeply. This kind of fussing seems to help babies burn off excess energy and settle into a calmer state.
As you get to know your baby, you'll start to recognize their needs by the sound of their cry. Responding promptly in these first months won't spoil your baby; in fact, answering their calls tends to mean less crying overall.
What you can do
- Meet the most pressing need first: warm, change, or feed your baby
- Try rocking, gentle swaying, or walking your baby in your arms
- Offer a safe swaddle, soft singing, or rhythmic white noise
- If you feel overwhelmed, place your baby safely in the crib and take a short break
